Huawei g610 review
Huawei Ascend G610 or G610s Reviewed – Good or Bad
Huawei`s G-series of phones are mid-range smartphones designed to offer comprehensive multimedia features at the best possible price. The G-series consists of several family members, one of which is the Ascend G610.
The most recent version is the G610s which is identical to the previous version except that it comes with a different processor. It remains a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, but it is from Qualcomm instead of the previous MediaTek.
All members of the G-series come with their own specifications. Higher model numbers indicate progressively higher or better specifications. The G610 sits somewhere in the middle within the G-series, between the G700 and the G525.
Picking the right smartphone can be daunting as is, but it becomes even harder when there are many models to choose from. It can be helpful to know how the G610 compares to not only other smartphones, but also internally within the G-series.
Good: the Huawei Ascend G610 supports the use of two sim cards simultaneously
The Huawei G610 has room to install two sim cards, which means that someone can use two smartphones while only having to carry a single phone. For all intents and purposes, these two sim cards and thus phone numbers can function as two separate phones using only a single phone.
Imagine all the things that you could do if you had two smartphones with you. The possibilities are endless and it`s up to you to decide what you want because the Huawei G610 allows you that possibility. You could use one number for a certain purpose and the other for another purpose. Use a different phone company to make up for a poor signal in a certain area.
All of that is possible with the G610 with the exception that you only need to have one phone with you all the time. There is no need to carry a second phone with you. In practice, this is very useful and probably the best thing about the Ascend G610.
Neutral: the G610 comes with a 5 inch screen, but it`s not a High-Definition one
Like the G700, the Ascend G610 comes with a large five inch LCD touchscreen which can be useful if you have bad eyes due to everything being bigger on the screen. However, it`s not a High-Definition (HD) screen with a lower resolution of 540x960.
Not surprisingly, the screen of the G610 is less sharp and has less room for webpages than HD screens. More and more websites are designed for at least an HD screen. Not having one can cause a webpage to appear less than perfect compared to what was intended. So while you get a big screen, it`s not without some drawbacks.
Neutral: the brand Huawei has much to prove
While Huawei is slowly making inroads, it`s still not a brand that everyone is familiar with. That can both be a good thing and a bad thing. It may be that Huawei is actually a great brand that just hasn`t been discovered yet. Or it could just be a poor quality brand.
As time goes by, the brand should gradually establish itself. Until that happens, the brand will not carry the same weight as other brands such as Samsung and so on. The name may not scare people away, but it won`t attract them either.
Neutral: the Huawei G610 comes with 4 gigabytes of internal storage which can be expanded
The Ascend G610 comes with four gigabytes of internal storage of which around half is taken up by the operating system Android. That means you will quickly run out of space if you have lots of files such as MP3 files.
Fortunately, the Huawei does come with a MicroSD slot which you can use to create more room to store your files. Too many smartphones do not give you this option, but force you into using their socalled cloud solutions which are more expensive for the average user.
Bad: the Huawei G610 does not support all bands for an optimal signal
Like some other members of the G-series, the G610 supports the most important bands, but not all of them. Depending on what bands your phone company uses, you may get a poor signal or no signal at all with the G610.
It is therefore prudent to verify what bands are required in your area before committing to the Ascend G610. If you need one which the G610 does not support, then you cannot use the G610 and you need to find another phone to use.
Bad: the front camera of the Huawei G610 is almost useless
The G610 comes with cameras at the front and back. Unfortunately, the one at the front takes such poor pictures and videos it might as well not exist. It`s there, but its of no use to people and just takes up space that could be used for something else.
The one at the back is usable, but at best average. If you`re looking for a smartphone because you intend to take lots of pictures, then the Huawei G610 is definitely not for you. You need to find another phone that can get the job done because the G610 is not it.
Bad: the Huawei Ascend G610 does not offer a good price/value combination
In the United States, it`s possible to buy the Huawei G700 for only $30 more than the G610. Yet despite the small difference in price, the Huawei G700 offers the following extras over the G610:
- Has a 5-inch screen like the G610, but it`s an HD one with a resolution of 720x1280.
- Has twice the amount of internal storage at 8 gigabytes.
- Has twice the amount of RAM at 2 gigabytes.
- Both the front and rear cameras are much better with support for 1080p Full-HD video.
With the exception of the above, the G610 and G700 are identical, including support for two sim cards. Hence, it seems to me that the Ascend G700 offers the consumer a much better price/value combination than the G610.
